My hope MS is monitoring this newsgroup.

Today I have received a request from the 3rd maybe 4th Support Professional
with different case numbers regarding my problem not being able to access WU
site.

I don't believe that many individuals are trying to resolve this issue, or
that many individuals are needed, I think this being passed around as nobody
knows how to solve the problem. Checking a newsgroup dedicated to WU it
appears that WU has become a major problem that MS is ignoring or does not
know how to fix. The multitude of error messages that are displayed trying
to access WU is mind numbing. The number of suggestions I have tried would
fill a book. What's the solution?. Is all this all trial and error?.

Stan.

Hi Stan

What is the problem you have with WU and have you tried a System Restore to
remedy the situation?

Carey Frisch (MVP), Will Denny. Here is my Problem. There isn't a site I
haven't tried or suggestion from Support Professional etc.

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Microsoft Windows that helps you
get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use
Windows Update. If you are looking for updates to Microsoft products for
Macintosh operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/.

Are you using Internet Explorer when accessing the Windows
Update web site? Third-party browsers will not work with the site.

Stan;
What is the source for the Windows XP installation?
Was it a windows XP CD?
Is the CD original and not a copy?
Is the Product Key original and not a copy?
OEM?
Upgrade from previous OS?

If you have a spare hard drive or can borrow one:
Temporarily swap spare for your hard drive.
Perform a Clean Installation of Windows XP:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/cleanxp.htm
Install SP-2:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

Try Windows Update again.

Jupiter Jones.

All my WIN OS's were upgrades from the original installation of WIN 95.
It was a windows XP CD, original not copy, Product Key Original not copy,
not OEM. SP2 was WU/AD in August of this year. No problems after install of
Sp2 until about 9/17/2004. no new programs or hardware after SP2 . Sp2 went
smoothly without a hitch. In KB article to determine which version of
Internet Explorer I am running doing a search for shdocvw.dll I found 11
listings , three of them don't give a choice for properties view, only
Extract etc.

Don't have a second drive to do what you suggest.

What problem? What specific error messages do you get? What do your
system event logs report? What changes, if any, did you make to the
computer's hardware or software configuration immediately prior to the
onset of the problem? What specific troubleshooting steps have you
already taken, and what were the results of each?

No one can help if you don't provide at least a modicum of information.

Check my reply to Jupiter Jones post. No error messages just unable to
access WU SITE. AU appears to be working because prior to shutdown last
evening OS said updates would be installed and computer will shutdown. Four
updates were installed prior to shutdown. Best to say what haven't I tried,
also with some help looked in the registry as I am not knowledgeable on my
own to pry in those waters.
