What's a cab file and how do I turn it back to a normal one?

I tried to install a new versionof msn messenger but an error comes up saying
the file could not be extracted it might be a corrupt cabinet file.
What does that mean?
How do I fix it?
Please help

A "cabinet" file is Microsoft's method of compaction for distribution files.
Sorta like ZIP.

You fix the problem by getting a fresh copy of the file.
 
Cabinet files are compressed packages that contain a number of related
files.
You can extract individual files from the cabinet files to replace
missing or corrupted files.
