One of the people I support in my office has a laptop that they give
all their lectures from. I create the lectures with their material and
they present them. Up until a week ago everything always worked fine.
The problem now is that all of a sudden none of the videos will run in
the presentations. They worked up until a week ago. I took the
lectures off their machine, tested it on a couple others and it works
just fine. I have tried reinstalling the office suite, but that did
not work. I tried recreating the lectures and putting new ones on the
machine, but that did not work. It seems like something has gone wrong
somewhere else. Could it be something with the mplay32? I am out of
ideas.

thanks for the help.

Are the movies avi's or Quick Time movies (mov)?

Chances are the default player has changed. This is a
very easy fix. Let me know what files they are and I can
give you a very quick fix to your problem.

PowerPoint doesn't use the Windows "default" player. It uses the Windows MCI
player which is mplay32.exe on Win 2000 and XP and mplayer.exe on Win98 and ME.

The screen just goes white. The videos were avi's, but i converted
them to mpg1 and it is still happening. I know it is not a linking
problem. I am very experienced with using video in powerpoint. I will
read your web page and let you know if it helps.

You haven't told us what version of PowerPoint is in use, so I'll assume for the
moment that it is PowerPoint 2003. How long is the full path to the video file?
PowerPoint 2003 has a limit of 128 characters. Move it to a new folder, perhaps
C:\video, and then delete and reinsert the video file in the presentation and
test it. Does that help?

The screen just goes white.
Probably the length of the folder/directory is over 128 characters
e.g. c:\thisisnice\isntit\maybe\someday\allcomputers\willjust\work\theywillwontthey\my-video.avi
I will read your web page and let you know if it helps.
It's fellow powerpoint mvp Echo Swinford's site

It was the length of the file path. I moved all the presentations to
the root of the c drive and that fixed it.

thanks for your help.

Joey,

The white screen happened to me last week. Lowering the path depth stopped the problem for me. So it was my first guess
for your particular white screen problem too.

TAJ, was that also in PowerPoint 2002?

I am positive it is 2002. I am in charge of all the software selection
and purchasing for my department. I have to know exactly what versions
of everything we have. There is also a visually noticable difference
between 2002 and 2003.
