What to do with Error message: cannot shift object off sheet

My excel spreahseet has an outline so that it shows or hides certail level
of details by clicking the symbols 1, 2, or 3 located at the upper left hand
side of the worksheet. I am not sure what I did so that whenever I click the
symbols e.g. 1 or 2, i get an error message "cannot shift object off sheet" .
How do I correct this error?
