I think my registry became damaged after an attempt to use, then restore
settings from GameXP. There is no system recovery as near as I can tell, as
that was turned off by GameXP.
My symptoms:
Boots Ok to welcome screen;
Login to user gets going, then hangs at different stages -- start bar
Explorer does not repond, network/internet is unavailable (2-3 Norton AV
dialogs saying it cannot scan e-mails).
Ctrl+Alt+Del to get Task Manager is OK. Shows two SVCHOST apps taking approx
50% CPU.
If I open MMC (via Task Manager) and Computer Management / Services, it
shows SSDP Service is "Starting" and WebClient is "Stopping".
If I DISABLE SSDP, things settle down, and the start bar Explorer starts
responding. (Then reset it to Manual.)
But still no network or internet.
IPCONFIG shows 169.(...) which is no good. IPCONFIG (/RELEASE and) /RENEW
fails.
I have looked at the registry for bad programs in RUN or RUNONCE, and cannot
see anything out-of-place.
Other details:
WinXP Home, SP1
Small home LAN accessing DSL with router. (Two other computers work fine.)
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks.
