my pc-self build-5.1.2600 SP1 build 2600-AMD XP2400-512ddr-nvidia geforce mx 440-gigabyte mother board-dvd/cdrw combi-dvd-ram-80gb primary-60gb seconary
i have tried two different sound cards on, each of which causes my pc to either freeze on boot up for about 1 minuet minimum, or it freezes for about 30 seconds and then goes for full restart. both sound cards are 4.1, because all i am trying to do is either use powered speakers or headphones, a mic and use the line in for converting old records and cassettes to cd
i have installed both the drivers recieved with the sound cards and/or the driver updates suggested on the windows update site. the sound cards work when fitted to another pc using either XP or previous operating systems
has any one any suggestions before i rip out what little hair i have left.

You said everything except the sound cards you have.
If you mother board has sound built in, have you disabled it..?

I use Soundblaster Ensonic on my sys and I have installed almost all the
Soundblast Sound cand on various computers. May sure it is not an onboard
VIA chipset before discarding these cards. You may need a updated 4 in 1
driver from www.viatech.com . You may also want to goto the manufacturers
website and see if they have updated drivers. I have never heard of sound
cards slowing or freezing on bootup.
Also try safe mode. You may be able to see what exactly what the conflict
is.
