This weekend I am moving to a computer with XP from W98se.
What surprises should I expect?
Are there things like scandisc, msconfig, defrag ie system tools I
suppose.
I survived the transition from 3.1 to 3.11, 95 and 98.
I use a number of freeware programs aquired over the years. I suppose
I will have to try them in turn to see if they work, but are there any
known no-nos?

Hi

Have a look at the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/default.asp

Scandisk is now 'Check Disk' - chkdsk from a command prompt
msconfig is still there
defrag is still there

About moving from one os to another you will be able to read in Help and
Support in Windows XP. There is a lot of information for new users came from
other OS. Windows XP has all the benefits of other (previous OS) and even
better. It has chkdsk instead of scandisk, msconfig, disk defragmenter works
in new MMC console.

Thanks for the offer. I will post here as you helping me might help
others. Not that I'm sure where here is as I cross-posted to two XP
groups as I didn't know any better :o)

X-posting to two is fine. It's doing it with 10 unrelated groups that makes
people ignore yo.

It wasn't only that, it was which one Roma is on and which is better
when I need help.
Unless I crosspost for evermore.

You should expect to use the Help and Support feature in XP a lot. It's
about the only meaningful improvement in XP over previous Windows versions.

No suprises, but things being done in different manner, as this is
supposed to be multiuser, multitasking system.
It takes some time to get used to this concept.

Off course.
I survived the transition from 3.1 to 3.11, 95 and 98.

So your fingers know the feel of keyboard keys. I would suggest a
learning period on Win2k or even NT4 to familiarise youself with this
brand of OS's.

Scandisk is not there, as it was a FAT only tool; replaced by CHKDSK run
from a command prompt. Other tools to be found at All Programs -
Accessories - System tools.

Scanreg is no more - instead there is System restore, which is more
comprehensive. Each day it backs up not just the registry but also
changes to system files since the last time, so you can unwind changes.
Windows Update and many software installs also make such points. This
is to be regarded as a short term (say a couple of weeks), bit a long
term backup, and does not touch user data.

MSConfig is much the same - Start - Run - MSConfig, as is regedit
I survived the transition from 3.1 to 3.11, 95 and 98.

Avoid anything that would try to deal with hardware itself. It will
probably be prevented from running - eg Norton Disk Edit will not be
allowed to run - but don't take risks. Indeed system utility packages
in general should be uninstalled before upgrade, and then XP ones
installed if you feel you must. Apart from Anti Virus and Anti-spyware
I would avoid third party tools. And although XP has some basic CD
burning capacity, you may want to use the package you had before: again,
uninstall first, install an XP compatible version after. (see my
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm page)

And Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm
