My HP with win xp home edition is only 5 1/2 months old. When I decided to
try all the programs, I was shocked. Excel, Excel4, Lotus, Powerpoint,
Frontpage, and more had no files. HP says go download some. But, I'm not sure
what I can put in here. New at this and worried I'll mess up. Could someone
please help me out?

What do you mean by "no files"? Was Office supplied with your system?! It
isn't, and never has been part of Windows. If you feel you should have
Office then you will need to talk to HP. It cannot be downloaded. HP, as the
OEM, is responsible for any, and all, support. Take it up with them.

If you have no 'data' files, then this is what one would expect with a new
compuetr and having only the application software installed.

Should you wish to create files [after all this is what a compuetr is for:
that is to create and manipulate work] go ahead and start a NEW workbook in
Excel.

Should you have a need to perform a task, not wanting to start from scratch,
then if you have Office 2003 [or parts thereof] you can click on the Web link
and get templates from Microsoft's Online site.

thank you very much. I knew I had home not office. I was notified by HP that
compaq had used 2 different motherboards and they asked if all programs came
up for me and I said no. This was a Christmas bundle package and was suppose
to have extra's in it. But apparently it only has caused greif. Sorry if you
were offended in any way. I am new at this and HP confused me when they were
asking about the office programs when I knew I had the Home edition. Thank
you for your time and please have a nice day.

You seem very confused
You do not need to re-install XP

Home and Office are referring to two different things.
Your operating system, Windows XP, comes in two favours Home and
Professional.

'Office' normally refers to Microsoft OFFICE suite which also come is two
or three flavours. Basic, Professional and Small Business.
The applications EXCEL, WORD, ACCESS(Professional), Schedule and PowerPoint
can all be obtained and can operate separately without the
OFFICE umbrella.
Your HP system seems to have come with the Lotus Office suite (not
Microsoft's) but also includes Excel from Microsoft (2 versions) FrontPage
and PowerPoint from Microsoft. (one reason why I never buy bundled
software)

Perhaps you should enrol in a basic 'computer users' course to straighten
out the concepts and terminology

I think that maybe you are in over your head here. The operating system for
your computer is Microsoft Home. Microsoft Office is a suite of
applications (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint). Your HP most likely
came with a timed trial 60 day version of Microsoft Office. On the 60th day
after you activated your computer, the version of Office that was supplied
with your computer will cease to function. Your only option is to purchase
the full version of Microsoft Office. The Student and Teacher edition of
Microsoft Office is only $150.00.

There is no way to convert the timed trial version of office that you have
to a full version, short of buying a full version license.
