What protocols do I need for LAN gaming?

My son wants to play a game (Warcraft) on our home LAN. We have Windows
XP home and Windows XP Pro (both SP2) connected through a DLink router.

All I see in network properties is TCP/IP on both and nothing more. Do I
need NetBEUI and IPX/SPX for home LAN gaming? If so, can I install them
without screwing everything up? If not, what should I be looking. Have
tried disabling the Windows firewall on both computers. Can't seem to
find what I need when I google.

Generally speaking, most modern games require only a TCP/IP network
connection to play over a network.

Ron,

is that really Warcraft, or is it perhaps Warcraft 2 or perhaps
Warcraft 3?

The former require IPX, but they are quite old.

Should have said that it was Warcraft 3.

Warcraft 3 uses UDP. In other words, you only need the TCP/IP
transport protocol.

Correction, it seems to use TCP and apparently no UDP at all,
not quite sure about the latter.

This doesn't matter for you though. You still only need the
TCP/IP protocol.

If you use a router, you have to open and forward a few ports,
some of which can be modified in the game, so several people can
play through a NAT (Network Address Translation) router.
