I realize this is the wrong group but perhaps someone could direct me to the
appropriate group.

I am interested in "cleaning" up an old bogged down computer's Windows 2000
system. Thing like old inactive registry entries, even new one not being
used, or anything else along these lines. It is a borrowed laptop I am
getting ready to give back therefore anything I do must be 100% safe for the
system.

Thanks in advance... Bob

There is no need to mess with the registry. Just do a temp files cleanup
and remove the programs/data you created.

Do a fresh install of Windows 2000. During the install, select to
format the partition. It will take less time to do a fresh install of
the OS, reinstall the applications, and redo any tweaking than to wade
around trying to find everything you need to cleanup or repair in the
current polluted installation. Obviously you will need the
installation media for the OS and all applications, but then if they
were legitimate licenses of that software then you can get their
install media.

Geeeeeezzzzz - don't do this on a "borrowed PC"!!! You probably do not
have the Windows2000 OS disk, nor have the disks for other apps that
were installed.
Do the normal uninstall of apps you put on it and do a thorough
cleaning by using the Disk Cleanup and you can download the below.

Guess that depends on the owner. I personally would not want back a
host that has been so badly polluted by the borrower that they even
had to be concerned about returning it to me. If they are concerned
then they need to clean it up and doing uninstalls is not an effective
cleanup of a polluted host. Of course, this borrower could simply ask
the owner but since he didn't then I suspect he has been doing
something with the computer that the owner would not approve and is
concerned there will be traces of his misbehavior which uninstalls
won't hide. It's the owner's property. Gee, why didn't the borrower
simply asked the owner what to do. Considering his question, I
probably wouldn't want him to do any cleanup and I'd get stuck doing
it (which, depending on how badly he polluted the host, would result
in a fresh OS and apps install). Could be he just wants to be polite
but his cleanup could render the computer useless or unstable or
remove more than he should so, again, he needs to ask the owner what
he should do, if anything.
