What makes an effective PPT presentation?

Are there any rules/standards to follow (i.e. max bullets, images, etc.) when
designing slides a PPT presentation (if you don't want it to look
unprofessional)?

I'm a college student working on a group presentation, and I'm hoping I can
get some information on good PPT slde design to my team. Thanks for your time

The most basic rule is the 7x7 rule (the exact numbers vary, but it gives
you a good idea). Basically, it says that a slide generally should have
no more than 7 words across and 7 lines down. However, that is very
basic. You might want to explore some of Richard Mayer's writings about
"the cognitive load of PowerPoint." Check out this interview with him:

His basic premise is to use words sparingly and use pictures to
illustrate your points.
