A friend of mine has about 100 files in his C\:Windows Directory that
look like this:

$NtUninstallKb917344$

What are these and can they safely be deleted?

Thanks

If you're confident that you won't need to uninstall either the
service pack or any of the subsequent hotfixes, you can safely delete
those folders. You can then open the Control Panel's Add/Remove
Programs applet and select each of the pertinent removal choices, in
turn. You should get an error message stating that the removal files
are missing, and asking if you'd like to delete the menu option.

Those are backups of files that are replaced when a hotfix or other update
is installed to Windows XP. If you delete the folders then your friend will
no longer be able to uninstall those hotfixes. If your friend wants to
remove them still, point them to this little utility -
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm.

They are the uninstall files for hotfixes you've installed. You can delete
any or all of them, if you're sure you'll never
want to delete the associated hotfix. Go to MVP Doug Knox's site,
http://www.dougknox.com/, click on "Win
XP Utilities" on the left, then choose "Remove Hotfix Backups"

Personally, unless you need the disk space, I'd recommend leaving them
there, just in case. And if you need the space that badly, deleting them
would just be a stopgap measure anyway, and you need to buy a larger drive.

To add one point to the other posts, don't delete the $hf_mig$ folder. It's
needed for future updates.
