Doris:
I just read the article in your sig regarding installation. Possibly like
you, since I have the most computer knowledge in my somewhat
luddite/neo-Luddite group of family and friends I end up (for good or bad)
being the source of all support.
It is frustrating for me to see people struggle with any OS, but I get
particularly frustrated when someone has a problem and assumes it *is* the
OS. Since no real techical information was provided I can't speak to the
specifics of what the issue was, but without the proper drivers/bios/etc.
these things can happen. Vista went gold last year so the disk contains a
finite set of drivers and Microsoft has provided the Update feature that
brings down the current stuff from the Internet. I've spend some time over
the past couple of weeks to build my own Vista distro that contains
preinstalled apps and additional drivers.
Anyway, the purpose of this response is to suggest that using one person's
experience (and dare I say ignorance) of a product to infer that the product
is inferior may not get the milage you desire. I'm sure nobody in a *nix
forum would be impressed if I came in and said I could install Windows in
less than 30 minutes but couldn't get <insert favorite distro here> of *nix
installed in less than three hours.
