The max number in a new workbook can be set to 255 but more can then be
added.
If you google the topic you'll find mentions of spreadsheets with up to
several thousand sheets. Of course, you might have the memory to open such a
workbook but it could crash others' pcs.

Microsoft says this is limited by memory, but I have crashed Excel at around
7000 sheet but with plenty of memory to spare.
But who would want 7000 sheets in one workbook?
No need to Goggle, its in the help system under specifications.
