What is the corresponding version of xp pro in vista? It seems it has so
many options.

Vista Business.

If you can afford it, and think you might want Media Center
at some point, get the Ultimate version.

Vista Business and Ultimate are the same or better than XP
Professional. Have a great day.

is it really that hard?

XP Home -> Vista Home
XP Media Center -> Vista Home Premium
XP Pro -> Vista Business

Vista Ultimate is like Vista Business + Media Center + extras. its the only
"new" Vista version.

Well, technically- XP Media center was XP Pro plus Media Center addition.

XP Media Center is actually closer to Ultimate than
Home Premium.

I believe XP Media center was XP Home plus Media Center addition.

Strangely, the install described it as Pro.

But when I tried to install VPC I got the message I needed Pro!

John

Correct, MCE is a superset of XP Pro.

I disagree with this comparison, because even the Vista Home Basic has the
advanced permission settings in folders like Windows XP Pro which is not
present in Windows XP Home.
So Vista Home Basic or Vista Home premium have much more advanced options
than Windows XP Home. In fact Vista main core is in all editions.

1) In the XP line, MCE is a SUBSET of XP Pro, with Media Center Added.
Media Center is NOT a part of the OS. It is an APPLICATION for ANY version
of XP.
2) In the Vista line, Vista Business is the equivalent of XP Pro.

If MCE is a "Superset" (do you even know what a logical "Set" is?), yet has
LOST functionality, it is NOT a "Superset", it is a "Subset").

If it were a "Superset", it would have ALL the functionality of the Set it
is in, PLUS MORE...

In other words, MCE is a Logical Set WITHIN a GREATER Logical Set, and
therefore, a "Subset".

By the way, the logical equivalent of XP Pro would be Vista Ultimate. Some
say it is Vista Business, but Vista Business is actually a "subset" of Vista
Ultimate, since it does not include Media Center, and a few other things.

Donald

Media Center would not be a consideration when determining what version of
Vista would replace Windows XP Pro. The lowest version of Vista that
includes everything that XP Pro has is Vista Business. XP Pro did not
include Media Center, it was a standalone product as the XP Media Center
Edition.
