Standby still runs on a little bit of power to keep the system in RAM,
Hibernate copies what's in RAM to the hard drive and shuts down. Once
you've hibernated, next time Windows boots, it will load the RAM image it
saved. If you've ever used VMWare, a good analogy would be
that "Hibernate" is like a pause button for your hardware.
