What is the best way of cleaning up unwanted or temporary files onmy HD

I've tried the Disck Cleanup that comes with xp, but the progress bar never makes it through it freezes... is there anything i can do about or do you recommend a better program for spring cleaning temp files still on my system...

Line 48, Right column "Disk Cleanup - Compress..."
Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
