What is relationship between Outlook and Outlook Express?

I have been fighting an e-mail attachment problem (see numerous posts
elsewhere). I have noted problems sending attachments from Outlook, and from
mail servers' web interfaces. I'm trying to establish what might be common
across those two ways of sending mail attachments. I have eliminated such
things as the NIC and the mail server, and am still playing the elimination
game. One of the things I wondered about was the exact mechanism whereby
files get attached and sent along with an e-mail message.

I have reinstalled Outlook - does Outlook Express get reinstalled when I do
that? Or do I have to uninstall/reinstall IE? Do both of those mail methods
use Outlook Express? Neither?

How is OE installed, anyway? How does one uninstall/resintall it, anyway?
Or should these questions be better directed to an IE group someplace?

Thanks!

OE is installed with Internet Explorer.

It is completely different to Outlook, which is usually installed as part of
Microsoft Office. There are separate newsgroups for OE.

Both programs can be used to send emails. Decide which one is giving you
the problem and post in the appropriate group.

My problem lies partially in trying to figure out which program is causing
the problem. That is, I have the problem when I send e-mail attachments from
Outlook (my default mail program). I notice that in IE, Outlook is also my
default mail program - does that mean I have no need for OE on my system and
could eliminate it? How?

The big question is: if I'm ending mail using a mail server's web-based
interface (NOT through Ooutlook, per se), what MS mechanism is really being
used to get that attachemnt to the mail server? OE or Outlook? I'm trying
to diagnose this problem by eliminating possible sources, and so far, I don't
know if I can eliminate OE or not?

Can you shed any light on that?

Some OE files are required by the system, attempting to uninstall it can
lead to problems. - You can only, I believe, manually uninstall.

If you send anything via a web interface, niether OL or OE is used. Thats
not to say some win api might be used.

Check the google results for this err msg

Thanks, DL.

There is a HUGE number of Google hits for "0x800ccc0f" - it's very difficult
trying to find any that match this particular set of symptoms. I'm really
trying to ascertain if I can eliminate Outlook (and also OE, if that's
involved - that's what I've been trying to find out in this set of threads)
as a causative factor. My test cases always fail in OL, and they also fail
when using web interfaces to send large attachments.

If I can eliminate OL, that would serve to narrow down the list of suspects.
I have two different mail servers involved where I fail (OL or web-based)
one uses Squirrel Mail, and the other (usa.net) uses who-knows-what. I don't
know if they use some Windows api or not. If I could establish that, then I
could concentrate on other possible causes for my problem. It's significant,
howver, that another PC behind the same router, sending the same file, using
the same mail server, has no problem - it's clearly something amiss on this
single pc. Any bright ideas how to diagnose?

I only found 300 odd, and many of those pointed to same data

You're absolutley right - I must have had my head up my butt on that one.
I've spent so much time Googling and searching, I got confused.

Nevertheless, I've pretty much tried (or eliminated) everything the
pertinient of those posts that I read suggested. What's particularly
distressing and frustrating is that I've got another PC that's identically
(to the best of my ability to ascertain) configured, and it never fails.

I've downloaded Dependency Walker. Given what you know about this particular
problem - which module(s) would you suggest be traced using this utility?
That is, since I'm *pretty* sure that it's not Outlook-related, where should
I look?

(Forgive me if this is a dupe - had a system hiccup there...)

I ran TDIMON and got some results across the period when the error of which
I have been writing occurred. I could surely use some help in interpreting
the TDIMON output, though.

In the log, I see a number of outlook.exe TDI_SEND requests. These tend to
show as successful any time from .2 to 1.2 seconds later. At the end,
however, one of these times out in .77 seconds. My first question, then,
would be why would that one time out in .77 seconds, when earlier requests
ran longer without timing out?

Also, I see scads of explorer.exe IRP_MJ_DEVICE_CONTROL requests occurring
every 100 us or so. What's triggering all these requests? TDIMON "Other"
info for these says, "IOCTL_TCP_QUERY_INFORMATION_EX". Are these requests
normal? Or are they evidence of something insidious going on?

Since I surely don't know what I'm doing here, I could use plenty of help in
using these results. If I need to move to a different group, please let me
know which would be most appropriate - thanks!

I've used this app to identify a problem module/process
You have to run/start the App via the DW interface to see where/what is
triggering the err.
I believe you stated err occurs whilst using OL. In my case the problem was
with IE and it pointed to a problem with a vid.driver

I read elsewhere that all those explorer.exe requests were for updating the
icon in the system tray to show the connection status. I turned that off in
the properties for the network connection, and that has stopped the
explorer.exe requests.

Sadly to say, however, that it seems to have no bearing on my *real*
problem...
