I have been having lots of problems getting XP PRO reinstalled. After lots
of problems I finally got a set of rescue disks made. The first time that I
selected which drive on which to attempt the repair instillation it rebooted
& gave me a message about NTLDR being missing. I had no idea as to what
that was so I just tried everything again.

I loaded the disks again & got to the stage where I had to choose which
drive I wanted to do a recovery reinstall on. Once I choose the drive it
asked for administrators password. I have never ever had a password on my
machines so I just pressed enter. What displayed was 'C:\WINDOWS>' What
does one try next besides take the machine to the shop? I am sending this
message from a laptop.

Thanks in advance?

I think you are ending up in the Recovery Console, which is not what
you want.

This site has a step-by-step guide to repair-install, which should
leave your data intact:

Good luck

What is the difference between 'the recovery console' & 'a repair -install'?

The recovey console fixes existing installations of Windows. A repair
install 'installs' a new installation on top of the other (it does not
ask for paswords), so you will have to go to Windows Update again.
