What is MsMpEng.exe process?

The MsMpEng process chews up about 50% (!!!) of my processor time when no
apps are running -- just my desktop. No other process appears to be running.
I've tried to let it run its course but after 10 minutes, I'll restart the
PC. It doesn't always happen and I've tried to recreate running applications
to see if I can trigger it. No luck.

Any ideas? Thanks for your help.
