i have a project to format a document using word and there is an instruction:
no widows or orphans. any ideas?

Hi Jim-

Widow/Orphan Control prevents the 1st line of a paragraph from being at the
bottom of a page by itself with the rest of the paragraph on the next page
and prevents the last line of a paragraph from being at the top of a page by
itself.

The feature is ON by default in Word. To double-check, go to
Format>Paragraph & click the Line and Page Breaks tab. There should be a
check in the box.

Howdy,

Your subject line and the post itself seem to ask different
things, but...

"widows and orphans are those words or short phrases at the
end or beginning of paragraphs that are left to sit alone at
the top or bottom of a column — separated from the rest of
the paragraph."

So, a paragraph might look like this:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
X

and that last word is an "orphan" left out there all alone.
