Hi

I run windows xp and msn messenger. I was just trying to open up Outlook
(2003) when the whole computer ground to a halt. When I looked in running
processes something called LUProxy.exe was listed several times. Does anyone
know what this is and should I be concerend? Actually, I don't even know if
this programme was responsible for the whole lot slowing down. I just assumed
because I've never seen it before. Help woul dbe appreciated.

Since a Google for LUProxy.exe only brings up one site connected with a
malware thread, it is suspicious. Also it is common for malware be
named similarly to legitimate programs.

You can send LUProxy.exe to Virus Total, where it will be submitted to
many antivirus companies and a report sent to you. Please post the
results of the report here.

In the meantime, here are general malware removal steps. Malware and
virus removal must be done systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV, plus Ewido. Do all
prep/finishing work and follow instructions to do all scans in Safe
Mode.

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Do you have any Norton/Symantec products installed, LU might stand for
Live Update.

Hi Steve

Yes I have Norton Internet Security and Antivirus. It probably does stand
for live update. I wonder why there would be five entries though?

Well, it might be Live Update but usually Googling for a known file like
Symantec Live Update files would produce a result. As I said, malware
can be named anything and its creators often name their files similarly
to legitimate files to evade detection.

The prudent thing to do is send the file to Virus Total to see what
comes back - after all, this doesn't cost anything and then you'll know
if this is malware *currently* *known*. I emphasize "currently known"
because new malware arises all the time so you always need to be
cautious.

Virus Total is usually pretty quick with their responses so you can
either wait to do scans or just go ahead. It certainly won't hurt to at
least do the prep work and some of the scans that are mentioned in the
link to my "malware removal steps".

Have NAV2004, no such filename. Liveupdate does work. Liveupdate asset
exists on C:\Program files\Symantec\Liveupdate subfolder. The only proxy
used is for email scanning.
