Windows XP Home (SP 1)

When, using System Mechanic 4, I search for duplicate files, I find a
number of them in
C:\WINDOWS\LastGood (read only 305 MB)
There is also a C:\WINDOWS\LastGood.Tmp folder - not a file, a folder
What is the LastGood folder for? Is it some kind of back up? If so, what
determines what's backed up?

.
When you press F8 on bootup, various options
like Safe Boot come up. Last good is one of
those otions. I am guessing that is what it
is for.

It's a backup of critical system files.
It's a fail-safe.. I would keep it.. It's on 305Mb..

Lastgood is used if ur system fails to start properly.
Then the computer will or will give u the option to
revert to the settings the way they were the last time
windows started sucessfully - keep these folders/files

At some point or other, this directory disappeared from my computer. Is
there are way to tell Windows to recreate it?

Hi,

Will is correct; the folder is related to the Last Known Good option. I
found a reference to it in an article; the article describes an unrelated
problem. It indicates, however, that the Lastgood.tmp folder is used to
store 'read-only driver files'. Here is a link to the article:
