What is ftpcmd.exe and why is it killing my system?

I have had problems since I installed teh SP2. I have current and active
virus and firewall protection in place (PCCillin) but I seem to have .exe
files downloaded alomst everyday that then run and soak up huge amounts of
processing resource (often 100%). I have deleted most and teh system returns
to normal but I cannot delete or imobilise this ftpcmd.exe file. It was only
created a couple of days ago and so I don't see how it can be an important
part of my system.

The result is that everything, and in particular internet explorer, runs
ridiculously slowly.

Anyone got any suggestions as to how I can delete/isolate this programme?

Thanks.

Charles

Where did ftpcmd.exe come from??? It seems to be for:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0
Microsoft Windows Internet Services (WinInet)

Where are these *.exe files downloaded from?

I don't have the first idea where they come from!!! Could it be something to
do with the automatic updates from Microsoft?? As I said, this has only
started since I installed SP2.

I'm running IE6.0 so presumably I don't need this file. I have tried to kill
it by ending the process with the task manager, but it won't let me. It won't
let me delete the file if I go to it through the file manager. I don't seem
to be able to prevent it executing at start-up.

Any other ideas??

Thanks for your help.

Charles,

Maybe ftpcmd.exe is not what it seems.

Do a Search on your machine for ftpcmd.exe.

HOW TO: Search For Hidden Or System Files In Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302347

When Search finds it | Right click it | Open Containing Folder |
Right click ftpcmd.exe | Properties | Check info on General &
Version tabs |
Description??
Company?? If not Microsoft, may be a virus.
What folder is it in?? i.e. C:\WINDOWS\system32 for example.
What info can you find?? Copy and paste into Notepad.

Update your anti virus software and run a full system scan.
