What is File Transfer Service (FTS)?

Hi -

I am trying to find some information on File Transfer Service (FTS),
mainly what it is, how it works, pros and cons, alternatives, etc.
Tried googling it but not much information found. If anyone could
provide some information or a website with some information, that would
be great.
