Simple terms, can someone explain Ethernet and Networking?
I've done some search and still can't get the concept.

Thank You,
Jean

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Ethernet is local area networking technology. Basically, it's what you'd use
to make a network (a group of computers sharing resources usually though I
suppose you could network them and share nothing but that would be
pointless) of computers. The network would be connected using ethernet
standards. It was sometime in the mid 1970s when the process was designed
by, of all peole, Xerox, Intel, and Digital Computers. (I believe Digital
was bought out by Compaq in the early 1990s.) Anyhow, I digress... The
network is a connection for computers to enable them to share information
and the ethernet is the technology used most often to enable that
communication.

From www.wikipedia.com

-- Ethernet (this name comes from the physical concept of ether) is a frame
based computer networking technology for local area networks (LANs). It
defines wiring and signaling for the physical layer, and frame formats and
protocols for the media access control (MAC)/data link layer of the OSI
model. Ethernet is mostly standardized as IEEEs 802.3. It has become the most
widespread LAN technology in use during the 1990s to the present, and has
largely replaced all other LAN standards such as token ring, FDDI, and ARCNET.
IN SHORT, IT'S A TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY THAT (LANS) USE, I GUESS.

it's that big phone plug looking thing that you plug in to your pc. the wire
has a big phone plug looking plug that goes in a network card or
on-the-motherboard lan(ethernet) port (hole).

the network is the whole thing, the sum of all pc's, routers, modems, hubs
and any other device(x-box) hooked on to the computer by way of the ethernet
cable and network cards. your pc is a part of the network and the cable is
too.

the internet stops at your modem and your network begins with your pc. (sort
of)

now if i could just get some help with my xp/win 98 home network i would
actually know something because when you get to the specifics, i know
nothing,lol.

Ethernet is a old networking concept but quite reliable one.the
hardware that support such type of concepts is known as an ethernet
card which allows ethernet enabled communication between two or more
pc.companies such as DAVICOM AND REALTEK semiconductors are pioneer in
making such cards.suppose you have a three pc and want them to connect
to each other to enable file transfer or mail transfer or jus anything
then there are several option to connect them
1.there are ethernet cards installed in every machine and u connect
them through cables physically.such type of communication is called a
LAN or ethernet communication network

2.Newest way of communication is wireless networking .IN this u should
have a wireless router that would be configured for each PC and then
communiction is possible between each pc.then that type of
communication is known as wireless ethernet communication

hope that examplifies ur query

"Ethernet
Ethernet is the most widely-installed local area network technology.
Specified in a standard, IEEE 802.3, Ethernet was originally developed by
Xerox and then developed further by Xerox, DEC, and Intel. An Ethernet LAN
typically uses coaxial cable or special grades of twisted pair wires. The
most commonly installed Ethernet systems are called 10BASE-T and provide
transmission speeds up to 10 Mbps. Devices are connected to the cable and
compete for access using a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision
Detection (CSMA/CD) protocol. "
