What is ".eml" and why doesn't my outlook email recognize it?

What is ".eml" and why doesn't my outlook email recognize it? Lately all my
emails with an attachment of .eml will not open and my outlook crashes.
 
When Outlook receives an *.EML attachment, it should have converted it to
native type *.MSG file. Try saving the *.EML to you file system (e.g. My
Documents), rename it with a *.TXT extension and then open it with notepad.
This will help you get an idea if the file is really an Outlook Express
message type file or something else.
