what is controlset key?

hi can anyone tell me what controlset key is? im in windows xp recovery
console and its checked out that i don't have an active controlset key. so
how can i activate this controlset key if i can't start windows up? and the
last known good configuration and other stuff don't work?? will reinstalling
windows xp help?
 
You'll need to tell us in what context you're asking. Some general info;
Looking in;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Select
you'll find the D_Word values for
"Current"=dword:00000001
"Default"=dword:00000001
"Failed"=dword:00000000
"LastKnownGood"=dword:00000002

CurrentControlSet is volatile and will always be an image (at boot) of
what's defined in ControlSetx where x = the value of "Current"

Choosing last known good boots the system with the control set that last
successfully booted your system. Control sets contain system configuration
information such as device drivers and services.

Whatever happens, do not take the drastic step of reinstalling Windows.
Do you have a "full" Windows XP disk?
Have you tried chkdsk in the recovery console?
 
no i don't have a full windows xp disc and yes i have done chkdsk in revoery
console it doesnt help.. cos it jus stopped at 87% saying i have a number of
unrecoverable files. what can i do?
 
Reinstalling Windows may be what you have to do now, because you do not have
the full XP disk. One way to save your files (if you do not have backups) is
to remove your hard drive and install it as the "slave" drive on another
system. You can get to your files that way and back them up to CD, etc.
