Hi. This is to ask if someone can explain to me what "autocaching for
programs" means in Windows XP. This Offline Files setting is
recommended for Application Data, Desktop (if read-only), and Start
Menu when doing folder redirection. I understand how you can cache
files, but programs? I cannot find any explanation in the XP help
system. Also, why would this apply to the Desktop only if it is read-
only? You can read what I am talking about by looking near the end of
the page on "folder redirection" in the XP help system. Thanks for
any help.

Okay, I'll bite. If YOUR programs do not reside in files, where DO they
reside?

If the user is offline, they normally couldn't run the programs
referenced by the shortcuts on the desktop or start menu that point off
to a mapped drive or specify a UNC for the path to the program. To run
them locally and when offline, the files for those programs have to be
cached locally.

"When you add files to the Offline Files folder, these files are
synchronized whenever the computer connects to the network."
"The Offline File folder cache is a mirror of the network file system."

My guess is that you'll have to select all files for a program to
include as offline files for the cached program to work using those
offline files. Maybe this helps:
