What is a Download Manager?

I've downloaded lots of stuff. I just follow the directions. What does a
Dowload Manager add to the process?

I've never understood download managers that claim to increase speed -
after all, the pipe is as wide as you are paying for and no amount of
d/l managers can make a line faster. Or have I got this totally wrong ?

No, you're not imho. I have never observed a speed increase. However,
being able to resume downloads can be useful, especially if you are on
a dial-up connection.

True, *IF* your download is using all your bandwidth. It is probably
not for numerous reasons. In that case, many d/l managers have an
option allowing them to open multiple connections to the server and that
*will* result in faster downloads.

Depends - they can speed up downloads where an artificial limit is in
place, for example if you connect to a webserver where file downloads
are limited to 32k/sec, per connection/thread and you download using 2
threads, you may get 64k/sec on the download instead of only 32.
Obviously, if there is no artificial limit on download speed server side
and you are already downloading at the maximum speed of your connection
using only your browser and a single thread, nothing you install is
going to make it go any faster...

freshdownload does multi thread - - i use 6 - and automatically resumes if
there is a connection break - up to 999 tries. useful for bigger d/l if
probs occur.

I use it them for their pause and resume capability.

Multiple connections; scheduled batch downloading with virus scan;
resumption of interrupted downloads (depends on the server). Personally,
I use Fresh Download but it's *real* registerware and, unless you're
cool, Fresh Devices will email you to distraction.

So, if I have the Fasterfox extension for Firefox installed and in
"turbo" mode, I don't need a download manager. Am I correct on this?

After a cursory glance at the page for Fasterfox, it appears to be a
background pre-fetcher for web page links. That is not the same thing
as a download manager.

IIRC, its "turbo mode" option also opens something like 48 connections
to the server during downloads. It includes a warning that it exceeds
RFC specs and increases the load to web servers. But if I'm wrong, I
need to get Firefox to recognize Fresh Download (my previous efforts
with an extension (I can't remember the name) were unsuccessful
Perhaps too old a version of Fresh Download?).

That was the extension I tried but couldn't get to work. It just
wouldn't make Fresh Download recognize Firefox when a download
started, although the same Fresh Download worked fine before, when I
was using Netscape Navigator (not Communicator).
