I was downloading a audio components from www.viaarena.com for my mother
board and saw this note:

This package is ver 2.0, adapted from logo'ed audio driver
ComboAudio_alu311b.zip for VT82C686A, VT82C686B, VT8231, VT8233, VT8233A,
VT8233C, and VT8235. We have added a generic device ID to the "VIAUDIO.INF"
file so that all the boards, regardless of their specific Subsystem IDs, can
use this component. As a result, the CAT file no longer works, however.

My questions are:

1.- What is a generic device ID?

2.- What is a CAT file and why do they say the file no longer works?

Thank you.

Hi, Rene!
My questions are:

1.- What is a generic device ID?
A PCI ID that suits for all VIA sound devices. To be able to insttall
this driver for an unknown (generic) VIA sound device.
2.- What is a CAT file and why do they say the file no longer works?
A kind of digital signature ensures that driver has passed MS tests, and
all files are intact. In XPe AFAIK it doesn't work at all. In XP it works.
As they (VIA) changed the Inf file and didn't update (passed MS tests
again) a CAT file - the CAT file is not valid now. Just skip this warning.

CAT files are usually located in windows\i386 folder.
