What happens when Excel 07 saves?

I'm having massive issues saving Excel worksheets.
When I have Sheet1 open, I can edit and save as much as I like with no
problems.
When I have Sheet1 and Sheet2 open (Sheet 2 has links to Sheet1) and make
changes, it literally takes 20 minutes or more to save. Even if the changes
are minimal.
Please can someone tell me what Excel does when it saves, and if I can turn
off whatever function it is that is causing this problem?
Thanks, in advance, for your help.

I've never heard this one before. I'm not sure if "Sheet2" is a sheet in
the same workbook or another. I tried to repro the problem both ways and it
didn't happen. Must be more going on than a simple link. Btw, I've found
just about everything significantly slower in Excel 2007 but not as bad as
you experienced with this problem ;)

Sorry, I didn't make it clear, Sheet1 and Sheet2 are two completely different
workbooks, fairly complex ones too. It seems that when you save, Excel
updates or recalculates all links and all forumlae. I would really like to
turn this "feature" off. I've gone through the options in Excel, but nothing
seems to fix the problem.

Did you turn off the "Recalculate workbook before saving" option under Excel
Options, Formulas?
