In Windows 98, there was a file backup program under System Tools.

It does not appear in XP - Home.

What do people use instead????

It is now NTBackup and you'll find it on the MS WinXP installation CDROM.
It is an option and you must manually install it.

On XP Home NTBackup is not installed by default. To install it you will need
to look on your XP CD. for more details visit my website

Backup is installed automatically on XP Professional, but not on XP Home. If
you have the complete XP Home CD, find backup on the CD, in
\ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP and install it yourself by doubleclicking the file
ntbackup.msi.

If you don't have an XP CD, you can download ntbackup.msi at

Almost any third-party backup program is a better choice. My personal
preference is Acronis True Image.
