Antway, here's where I'm at:

My computer will not turn off. It keeps restarting. Only by killing the
power can I turn it off.

I'm using a fully updated SP2
It restarts in safe mode.
I can't find the event log. I've found 3 files named eventlog dll that I
can't open.

I tried unchecking "automatic restart" and there has been no change and no
message.

Sounds like hardware issue, esp seeing as it does the same thing in
safe mode. You should try to restore back to an earlier date as
suggested earlier.
The power supply post may be on target....
Does it restart and come to the login page and, if so, can you log in?
When it shuts down, does it just restart or shut off? If it shuts off,
can you turn it on right away or do you have to wait a while?

And this computer has been working beautifully.

There is no restore point. It's a new hard drive. I loaded WindowsXP on
Saturday. Ran it till Sunday. Loaded Norton. Hooked it to the net. Updated it
from SP1 to SP2 and added all other updates to bring it current. All this
time it worked fine. Last night it began its restarting problem. Maybe I do
have a power supply problem. That's easily the most common hardware problem
I've had over the years.

It restarts just like I had hit the restart button. It never really shuts
off. If I pull the plug, it starts as soon as I power it. Everything works
fine while I'm using it.

Got your newsreader set to hide read posts?? I can see all posts here too.
One poster gave you this useful link in the replys you cant see.

http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

And another poster suggested a dodgy power supply.

What were you doing directly before it started the restart cycle. Installs/
updates??

Have you tried a restore or last best option to before the problem? I
don't always rush for this now as I feel more confident to find the info and
try to fix it. But its still a useful tool if all else fails.

When you scanned for malware/virus did you do it in safe mode with "show
hidden files and folders" selected from the tools/folder options/view tab?
I'm using spybot as well. Once it picked up something adaware missed.

The event viewer is accessed from control panel/administrative tools. Under
applications look for winlogon under the source headings around the right
time span. Right click and properties to view.

Was this a change of OS? I recently had a restart loop when I upgraded my
laptop. I had forgotten to update the bios to the one Sony recommended for
XP. I did get the blue screen message which was grumbling about drivers. I
reinstalled XP pro for a second time and its running nicely.

A brand new hard drive. First OS it ever saw.

The bios is stored on a chip on the motherboard, not the drive. Might be an
idea to check out the mb manufacturer to see if they have produced an XP
bios update. Even a brand new mb might need one depending on the OS of
choice I think?

Did everyone else lose the last several posts?

If we all lost the last several posts then none of us would know since you
can't know that something was lost if no one knows it was there in the first
place.

If you can't find a post you made search for it using Google Groups Advanced
Search. Search on your name as author, it can be filtered by searching in
only a certain newsgroup and by date and keyword.

http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?q=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&

Do yourself a favor and stop using the web interface to access what are
actually Usenet newsgroups. The web interface is awful. Try a newsreader.
XP comes with Outlook Express which can be set up for newsgroup access. See
this link on how:

Should have said "anyone". Several people knew it was there as it had several
replies.

Thanks for the other info.

You're welcome. I knew what you mean, just kidding with you for a bit of
humor.
