Hi Hal / Diane

That doesnt work: I arragned to put junk mail in a new 'ITEMS TO BE
DELETED' folder and
permanently delete them and when one came in I was told that I dont
havepermission to permanently delete them (I am an/the only administrator in
Windows 2000)

I didn't try moving messages to a different folder first, I just deleted
them from the Inbox as they arrived. Does it work from the Inbox?

In my case, Outlook 2000, C/W mode, used with an Exchange Server. I created
a rule to "Permanently Delete" a message with specific words in the subject
line, sent myself a message with a different email client using my personal
account. The message was, indeed, permanently deleted; my
"DumpsterAlwaysOn" setting (which allows deleted item recovery from folders
other than the Deleted Items folder) would allow it to be recovered,
however, it WAS deleted in place (Shift-Delete) from my Inbox, bypassing the
Deleted Items folder. Note that this rule doesn't work with earlier version
clients (Outlook 97/98) and is a client side rule if used with an Exchange
Server.

MS
has
(as
do
most other people) my folders NOT to be filled up with obvious junk mail.

And I have another problem which exacerbates this one which I have asked
about but which no one seemed to know the answer which was that my
rules
(I
cant figure out which one or ones) apply themselves to each message and
CREATE two or three versions of each piece of junk mail and then duly dump
them in my deleted items folder so it is important to have Outlook
permanently delete them so that I don't have to see/check that I dont want
to buy any prescription medications I don't need or see something
which
had
been on Oprah whoeversheis

I thought that was the error message I received telling me that it couldnt
process the rule but I must admit I had never tried deleting them
specifically from the inbox. I wonder why it can delete these particular
messages from the inbox but NOT from the deleted items folder?

I dont care about anyone seeing supposedly confidential info in my pst
file
or deleting them therefrom, all I want is something simpler: I want
(as

It's because when you delete form the Deleted Items folder you are actually removing all information from the meassage store about those emails. When you delete from some other folder and the email goes to the deleted items folder the message store still contains information about the message. It is that which makes the deleted items folder so very much different then other folders. I have not explained "why" you cannot "... delete these particular messages from the inbox but NOT from the deleted items folder" just pointing out the difference between the deleted items folders and the others. You cannot remove an item "permanently" from any other folder unless you hold down the Shift key I believe. No shift key necessary when deleting from the deleted items folder.

Oh, I see: So 'delete it' from any inbox means send it to the deleted items
folder and "permantenly delete it' simply does not work in that it just does
exactly the same thing, - sending the spam to the deleted items folder

But I want to "remov all information" which is obviously spam "from the
meassage store about those emails".

I suppose there is a reason why Microsoft doesnt want you to delete spam
permanently? I wonder why they give you this option? (even from the deleted
items folder?).

This is quite unusual in that MS usually puts their competitors out of
business OR buys them out which is what the European Authorities are
currently getting so steamed up about. This must be the only instance where
MS actually compels you to get someone else's application to do what their
own one says it is doing but doesn't actually do!

"This must be the only instance where MS actually compels you to get someone else's application to do what their own one says it is doing but doesn't actually do." - NOT by a long shot. This is a well known problem with software in general. It is why the caveat of most software is "It works." Since when did you buy a car and one of its selling points is that "it works?" That's the trouble with software and their makers.
