ANGEL needs help

It takes my new (2 months old) computer a long time to
boot up & load to the desk top. I was thinking it could
be too many programs loading at start up but I am an Win
ME expert and new to XP. I am skittish about making this
decision on my own. lol Please let me know what is
absolutely needed.

Hi,

I found that almost all of the Services in MSCONFIG can be
shut off GREATLY speeding up the machine. I have 60 of
some 80 Services SHUT OFF & the increase in speed & extra
resource capability is almost that of Linux.

Start,Run,type in: MSCONFIG & the Services will appear.
Uncheck all but the following if the above applies:

(If you're NOT doing Networking, Automatic Updates or
Remote Access (or Wireless Routers), I have the following
ON):

App Layer Gateway
App Management
Cryptographic
DHCP
Event Log
IMAPI CD Burning (OFF if you do not burn CDs)
Logical Disk
Logical Disk
Network Connections
Plug & Play
Print Spooler
Protected Storage (OFF if you do not want passwords stored)
Remote Access Auto
Remote Access Connection
REMOTE PROCEDURE CALL (NEVER shut this!)
REMOTE PROCEDURE CALL (NEVER shut this!)
Security Accounts (OFF if you do not want passwords saved)
Telephony
Windows Audio
Windows Installer
Windows Management Instrumentation
Workstation

Remember this disables Automatic Updates so you'll need to
do them manually but it's just a mouse click & well worth
the extra CPU & RAM you'll be getting (ie: saving).

Lastly, NOTHING but your Anti-Virus should be ON in
MSCONFIG in STARTUP. If you have many icons near the
clock, there are things "running in the background" that
can be safely turned off & used manually.

Good Luck!

I have read on numerous sites, (including BlackViper.com, a very
complete and detailed 'breakdown' of Xp Home and Pro stuff) that disabling
or modifying Services Configurations thru msconfig is a BAD idea.
Rather, go thru the Control Panel applet, 'Administrative Services" etc. I
have not had a problem with any og his 'tweaks' he is very knowledgeable and
has put tremendous time into his work..
Just my opinion (and his)..

One thing Windows XP does like is RAM. Too many budget priced
systems are being sold with Windows XP and only 128 mb of RAM.

That is a very minimal amount of RAM for Windows XP and it pretty well
guarantees that there will be a considerable amount of memory paging
activity as Windows shuffles memory pages back and forth between RAM
and the swap file because of the inadequate RAM quantity.

So if you only have 128 mb of RAM then you should consider adding at
least another 128 mb of RAM and might want to give some thought to
making it another 256 mb instead.

Good luck
