what does the private button do

I have looked on the internal help file, the online help, the user community
and I have tried Google.
But I have not yet been able to determine what is the actual function of the
private button.
Can some one please point me in the right direction

Marking an item as private is useful in an Exchange environment where
mailbox sharing is allowed. Marking an item private prevents people sho
share your mailbox from seeing that item.
