What does Post mean?

I have just started using Outlook XP. I see a menu item File > New > Office
document. If I select Word there is a Post button on the tool bar.
Pressing it seems to save the document somewhere, but where? What is the
purpose of this function?

Post saves the item to the currently open outlook folder.
