What does lsass.exe do?

I ran task manager to see if I could see something that could be
slowing my computer down and I noticed that the memory usage for
LSASS.EXE was increasing. I don't remember seeing that program before
so I would like to know what it does.

Thanks
Mike

Ever since I updated with service pack 4 I get Mcafee firewall
warnings about LSASS.EXE trying to access the internet.
I scanned lsass.exe and it came up clean even though Mcafee warnings
said it might contain a trojan.
Does the sp4 alter lsass and should it be trying to access the
internet every time I dial up?
Or is this a trojan or whatever?

Where is lsass.exe on your system?
If it's anywhere other than the system32 directory, it is suspect.

Ever since you installed SP-4 ?? Am I reading that wrong or do you
really think you installed SP-4? The rest of us are waiting for SP-2
which should be released anytime now and you already installed SP-4?
You from the future or something?

Yes the service pack for win2k NOT XP. Wouldn't contaminate my HD
with xpee.

I have it in winnt\servicepackfiles\i386 and
winnt\$ntservicepackuninstall$
As well as my sys32 folder.

It's probably ok, the automatic updater was on. Took a couple of tries
to get it to go away but now that's it's off no more alert.

XP is just a newer, prettied-up version of 2000; what are you talking about
contaminate?
