What does Hume mean when discussing the term "idea" ?

I'd like to know what Hume is saying in plain english, it's a very
complicated text. what does he mean by "self" and "idea" ? Thanks for the
help ...

In plain english, David Hume was a smarty-pants, a doubting Thomas,
and altogether too much of a godless tosser for this cat's liking.
He was right in one respect though: all humans are like animals.
