What does hpcmpmgr.exe do?

I'm seeing a XT system throw DCOM/10010 errors into
system log and Userenv/1524 errors into application
log as well as dialog box from hpcmpmgr.exe at attempted
logout when hpcmpmgr.exe is included in the startup.

This is not a networked system (home, dialup only)
so I suspect I don't need DCOM. The owner isn't
clear about how the system came to be in this state.

Suggestions?

I get no hits searching Google or Yahoo for hpcmpmgr.exe, but my guess
based on the filename is it might be part of an HP printing system
software installation, versions of which I have seen are problematic and
resource hogs.

While the user does have a HP printer, I think this
might part of the component management infrastructure.
At logout, a dialog box from hpcmpmgr.exe appears
informing that it is busy saving data.

Based on the Userenv/1524 error it appears that it
is seeking access to the registry. hpcmpmgr.exe appears
under the HKLM suite of servers.

Does the user have the whole bloated HP printing system software
installed? I'd try uninstalling it and see the results. HP printing
system is not needed for printing, only the drivers are.

The hpcmpmgr.exe file is not part of Windows XP.

HP acknowledges this issue and provides a utility online to safely
disable hpcmpmgr.exe. Follow this link;

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_searc...ex.jhtml?lc=en&softitem=dj-16758-1&sw_lang=en

An except from the HP support site;

"This utility will disable the HP Component Manager (hpcmpmgr.exe) on
your computer, preventing any future calls to HP Servers for this
program. The entries for the HP Component Manager software will be
removed from the Windows Registry. HP advises owners using Windows Me
and XP to make a System Restore point prior to running this utility
and another after it has been run. Click Start, Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, and then System Restore to run System Restore.
If you have previously signed up to participate in the HP Product
Survey Program, you can turn off the uploads of your printer usage
logs simply by pressing Start, Programs, HP, and then Stop HP Product
Survey Program Participation. You do not need this utility to stop
participation and the associated server calls to HP to upload your
data.

BEFORE PROCEEDING:
Be aware, if you have other HP All-in-one, Deskjet or Photosmart
printers connected and installed on the your computer, this utility
will also disable the HP Component Manager for those products. HP
Laserjet printers, HP ScanJet scanners and Photosmart camera software
and other HP equipment connected to your PC will NOT be affected by
this utility. Disabling the HP Component Manager will not affect the
normal function and behavior of the printer.

Also be aware that if you install other HP All-in-one, Deskjet or
Photosmart printers or if you re-install this printer this software
will be enabled again. You will need to run this utility again to
disable the software for those devices.

Step 2: Does your system meet the following requirements?

Operating system(s): Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows 98,
Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows XP
Download file size: 585.55 KB"
