What does error message " invalid Dos function" come from?

I tried to copy an avi file from a cd to my hard drive, but got the error
message:
"cannot copy xxxxxxxx.avi: invalid Dos function"

Does anybody know what this is or where it comes from? What is a dos error
message doing in XP?

And, of course, what's the workaround for this?

Thanks

Hi

Does the file play properly from the CD?

It plays on a non-XP system, but fails to play on an XP system (using Win
Media Player or DivX player).

Hi

Have you run chkdsk on your hard disk/partition?

Nope. So I ran it (without checking for bad sectors, as I don't know how long
that will take) and it finished OK with no problems detected. I'm about to
run it again to check for damaged sectors.

Hi

Run

chkdsk /f

You'll need to reboot your system.
