What does "burn in" mean?

Greetings to everyone,

I feel really dumb asking this but if I don't find out I'll feel dumber.
When discussing the issue of a new computer or building a new computer the
term "burn in" is mentioned quite often. Could someone please tell me what
"burn in" means and how do you do it?

I worked in Electronic manufacturing for a long time. "Burn-In"
relates to component/system failure. In theory, a marginal part, if
stressed will fail within a short period. Before shipping product it
is stressed (by heat & cold cycles) to simulate the effects of time
of use. So if perhaps 1-2% of finished manufactured goods are
going to fail in the field, you capture those before they leave the
warehouse or mfg facility and save yourself return & repair costs.
 
I neglected to mention how this works related to PC's. Burn-in is
just a form of "Stress" testing that pushes the hardware to it's limits.
It performs memory pattern tests, extensive CPU math processing
and very intensive Video performance. It works just like putting the
family car on a race track and running it at full throttle for a long time.
If any single component is marginal (likely to fail), it will do it quicker
under those working conditions.

Please keep in mind just because it says Miss Perspicacia Tick in the
headers of the message that doesn't necessarily mean it is 'our' Miss P.

Needed only because of poor MFG procedures, out of spec part interaction,
bad parts (Under designed, under speced, poor MFG of sub parts) and a lake
of build controls. If all the parts are MFG within spec, and the specs are
narrow within interactions, and the assembly is fool proof, then every
finished piece should work as intended. The major cause of product defects
is the lack of information about part interacts and under speced parts cause
by greed and marketing cost saving ideas, and under trained engineering
skills.

Do the math, and design the problem detection into the sub parts, and let
the product speak to you. When it does, listen.

Interesting time old argument.

Don't think like that, if you don't ask you never learn.

All good techs "burn in" new systems in order to test for any
problematic components, I run a diagnostic program continually on my new
systems for at least eight hours.
This program tests all components in a continuous loop, you may like
to think of it as stress testing.

If she is wise enough to direct her rudeness towards Michael Stevens (Senior Pirate and head of US underworld-MS-MVP), Kelly Korner (Our Babushka or as english call her [great] grand mother), or Jupitor Jones (Serial adulterer and runaway git from his illegitimate children), she would be tolerated. Hope this sets the scene for the next two weeks until the presidential election, after which I shall take steps to change my name to "@" if that is possible and find other targets to attack!!

I am surprised she is still alive. I got the impression that because SP2 patch her Pc exploded and she died instantly. Some people do have 9 lives after all. Bin Laden would be proud of her for surviving relentless bombardment by Uncle Bill.

Dick Chenney's (VP USA) daughters are lesbians and John Kerry has made sure the whole world knows about it!

I use non Microsoft products wherever possible which requires no activation.

I use Netscape 7.2 as my default browser which has everything I need for my work.

I believe in good Financial Management!! I do not believe in enriching rich jerks!
