What do you think of Antec power supplies?

I've seen P4 systems that were blue screening for no apparent reason,
totally recover
and run better than they ever have before .. even when they were new,
right from the
vendor ( you know who ! ). I made swapping many systems into Antec
cases a
standard in my troubleshooting. I have / had a huge box of bad
psupplies in my
storage area. None of them are Antec supplies.

I found a reliable and well respected power supply in the Antec
TruePower range. They are the only ones I'll buy now. Slowly as my power
requirements increase all my systems are being upgraded.

FWIW because they are widely used and you can actually see user reviews that
are somewhat creditable, I use them and are better than most in quality.
However, it is by no means a 100% 'no need to worry' of it ever dying
situation.
 
They ar some of the best, most conservatively powr rated power supply units
on the market. I have used them exclusively for years with excellent
results.

Had stock PS in an Antec case. Upgraded to a Tru-Control for more
wattage and th exterior voltage tweaking.

Only issue was an awful smell from the thing that lasted 3 days.
Electronic or Ozone like smell. A web search found others
experiencing it saying it would dissipate so I kept it.

This PC is in a room with Ham radios - there is no static interference
from the computer - unlike other cheapies that I may bring in for
repairs.

I had stability problems with my machine (Athlon 64 on a MSI K8N Neo2 PE
with 6800GTOC). They all went away when I bought an Antec TruePower
430W PSU off ebay and haven't come back since.

Good for folks who refuse to buy PC Power and Cooling.
They are better than Anonymous Pacific Rim Power Boxes, most of the name-brands
are, and I don't *mind* using them if they're not going to be pushed.

But they and their bling-brothers are nothing (inside) like a PC P&C design!

If you are putting a lot of money into a home-built system, ignore the "sexy"
supplies, especially the see-through supplies, unless you want to disrupt your
monitors, TVs, radios, etc.

Antec will do - I mean Antec supplies sit in machines I've built - I've told the
owners "when they die, I'll get you The Real One you didn't want to spend the
money on.

Most PC P&S supplies look like the generics (aside from the wording) - the
company is only now catching on to the strange idea of making a PS look fancy
though it adds nothing to performance (show me a study that shows wires wrapped
in nylon harnesses with shrink-wraps do better than wires bundled by nylon ties
every 2 inches and I'll change my mind)

What they do is they run, they handle spikes and surges (though connection
through a higher-level APC battery backup, at least a Back-UPS if not a
Smart-UPS is *always* called for) and put out squeaky-clean DC to the system. If
they go off, ever, they can be recallibrated through pots reachable from the
*outside* of the PS.

They're guaranteed for 5 years - which means you may well be on your second or
third mobo using the same PS unless power requirements drastically increase (if
you buy an SLI, you'll need PC P&C's 850-W unit)

Putting decorative features on power supplies makes as much sense as
painting racing stripes or flames on pacemakers because neither device
is visible in normal operation* anyway.

* Normal operation does not include running a computer inside a case
having a large plastic window that provides no RF shielding or
protection from fire that may originate internally.

Yeah, computers starting on fire is a MAJOR problem <snicker> Hey if it
does start on fire, I think I'd rather have that window there to see it
sooner rather than later.

Could be the start another useless mod accessory - a mini halon/fm200
system. With metallic sheathed hoses, front panel status monitoring,
etc. Who wants to invest?

Are you also selling celluloid case windows?

Second only to PC Power & Cooling, in my opinion.

Yes, a decent power supply. But none of the Antec supplies of that generation are
particularly quiet or efficient. Personally, I found Seasonic to be a better
supplier. A Super Tornado 400 (unfortunate name for a very quiet PS) would be a
good alternative to the True Power that you mention.

They could sell it as a "green" alternative. The computer would
automatically "recycle" itself at EOL. No complicated, labor
intensive manually separating the different metals and plastics.

But for the time being, I'm happy as a pig in s...
