I would like to be able to scan a form and then type in the
information.
What is a good way to do this?

1. Scan it with a scanner.
2. Type the information with a keyboard.

When you scan a form your get a image. You can use the text editing feature
of a image editing program {even Paint}. Takes some trial and error but can
be done.

You can use a OCR {Optical Character Reader} program that is designed to
preserve the form {some will not}. Look here:
http://support.scansoft.com/

If you have need to use the same form more than once, you may want to use a
program that will convert the form to a *.pdf file that you can fill-in.
Acrobat will as will programs from: http://support.scansoft.com/ .

I have tried Paint and it didn't take very long to know that was too
limited.

I have also tried using Presto! PageManager 6.03 that comes with my new
Canon MP 780.

Because I just opened a new checking account, I expect to get many new
forms from my utility companies so I can update my direct draft
information.

What I would like to be able to do is scan the form, then cut and paste
my personal information on the form and then print the form.

Presto! PageManager 6.03 will let me type the information into the form
but will not let me cut/paste it.

There just aren't good utilities to do this sort of thing with. You can
write a Delphi Program to print your stuff on the right positions on
top of an image of the form. It can be done, with a lot of work. I
wrote one for printing on top of HCFA forms several years ago. It was a
pain in the butt.

A friend of mine showed me how to do it with Paint Shop Pro. It would
be nice to have, but I am not going to spend the 75$ or what ever it is
to buy Paint Shop. I can do it with Paint but it is not worth it.

Because I have changed checking accounts, and will have to change all
my direct draft information, I will be a taking pen to each application
I get.

I will get one from phone, cable, elect, water and gas. I will have to
supply my name, address, phone, account number, routing number, and
address of my bank.

This is not a large amount of paperwork but think how many times you
have to furnish your name address and phone number?

Computers have been a home appliance for quite a few years now.
Applications and forms should all come on a standard 8x11 paper. The
name address and phone should be one copy/paste operation.

You then should be able to copy/paste account/router/credit card/social
security numbers or any other redundant information with better
accuracy.

This would be a small change for Paint. No bells and whistles, just a
simple copy/paste operation.

We have computers and still use paper/pen. You should be able to do
this email.

Or make it an image background in Word, or use the MS Office Document
imaging program. There are so many possibilities.

You should investigate Open Source software. For example, take a look at the
Gimp for a pretty sophisticated and FREE program for editing images.

I think the best thing would be........please go to out web page...fill
out our form, print it, sign it, and mail it back. (or scan it and
email it back)

It is a little overdue. This is the 21st century.

Our county waterworks doesn't even offer direct draft. For the past
two years I have been just e-sending $10.50 which is close to the
monthly bill and just let them keep the balance.
