I am trying to back up my word files everyday for transfer between my
desktop and Notebook.
Is there a software solution out there that would allow use of a CD-R or
CD-RW for constant writing until capacity is filled.

Is a CD-R possible or do I need a CD-RW.

Thanks to all for the help.

Nero will do all you are asking. I use 6 and I've heard a lot about it
being preferred to 7. I didn't choose 6 in lieu of 7--I started using it
before 7 emerged. Made me happy to read later that my already-paid-for 6
was still good! And yes, it is possible. And, as cheap as cd's are, and
with their fast capabilities, I'd use them instead of cd-rw. I'm not very
experienced in this, but I do several such tasks on an on-going basis and I
read a lot about others doing such. My 2cents. HTH, s

DeepBurner will work good for what you need it for. It can handle
multisession disks (which you can use CD-Rs for). It is also free.

DeepBurner on download.com:
