folders or programs my screen freezes for 20 seconds or so and everything
will disappear and reappear including my system tray except my epson monitor
icon next to my clock doesn't come back.

I know its a little strange but has anyone else had this happen with windows
xp and how do I stop it. is it my epson software causing this, how im not
sure

help please running 53.03 nvdida drivers not sure if they will cause the
problem

I'll be watching. I have the same problem. It only happens when
certain files/folders are displayed for me. If I can open into a folder
that does not have graphics or is not the "My Computer" view, I seem to get
by OK.

BTW that Epson monitor is still there, only the icon is missing. Mmm
I also have a Epson. I wonder . . .

I assume that nvdida driver is your video card, is that right?

yes that's right

and I only think this has started since I installed my Epson

don't quote me though

I think it is the Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) crashing and XP is trying
to restart explorer.exe.
You can open the Event Viewer to read the log.
and I think it only happens with XP Pro not XP Home.
XP Home will just die right there.

I'm on XP home (OE edition). I don't know about Dragon.

I just forced an event and this is what I got:

* The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

This might also be interesting:

* The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the stopped state.

This was the last of three notices (one start one enter and one stopped)
immediately preceded the crash.

That makes 10 times this month. Any suggestions for resolving the
problem. You have helped me define it better at least, so thanks for that
much.

I will be checking my printer drivers and see what I find there
tomorrow.

if you connect your hard disk with a cd rom drive together to the primary
ide cable.
try seperate them. plug the hard disk to the primary ide and plug the cd to
the secondary ide.
see if this makes any difference.

It happens alot on mine say two or three times a day, mainly when I try to
open a few folders at a time or programs, not necessary explorer just
anything. I am running windows xp pro edition

What are you system specs? CPU, amount of RAM and virtual
memory settings, hard drive speed? When you try to open
several files/folder and/or programs each requires some CPU
cycles, RAM is assigned to hold the files and unless you
have a lot of system RAM, the hard drive must be read to get
the new file and it must also be written to create the
pagefile in virtual memory for the files that are already
open. And a problem with video can effect the display.

If you open many files at once, suggest you spend $25-100
and buy all the RAM you can afford, many low cost new
systems and old computers often are in need of more RAM.
Suggest 512 MB if you open many files/programs or do photo,
video, or sound editing or big spreadsheets (512 is a got
minimum for a hard working system). Be sure to set the
virtual memory to an adequate amount. See

Well I finally got to check that out and found that the HD was on its
own.

The good news is I replaced my power supply (long story, but I did get a
quieter one) and I have not had the problem for some time now. Maybe the
old power supply had a problem, maybe wishful thinking.
