Huh

I know this is not the right newsgroup, but I can't find it. My friend has a
Sony Viao desktop computer with a Millennium operating system. When booting
up, it will go to to the *Me* screen, and it will hang there forever. I did
it the other night. it hung at that screen (with the computer activity light
flashing, and the harddrive making noise) all night. It was still doing that
in the morning 7 hours later. I have tried the *Me restore*, scandisk,
scanreg, a *Tufflite test* where it checks different components of your
computer...even tried to start it with the startup disk...nothing works!
Before too long this desktop is gonna find itself at the bottom of the lake,
but before throwing my hands up and throwing this into water, I thought I
might check here. Can anyone give me some ideas? Thanks!!!

ME is the worst OS Microsoft ever made. Suggest nuking it, put on
win2000 or XP instead. Before you do, you will want to backup any
important documents.

(thanks, Dave!)

Huh....
It seems likely that your computer is set to boot from the HD before
anything else - but maybe I'm reading your original post wrong.

Please answer the following questions

1) What happens when you try to boot to Safe Mode? (Hold down the CTRL key
during the POST boot phase - you should get to the Startup menu screen)
2) What happens when you boot with a Windows ME boot floppy? (or the startup
disk - is this a floppy, or a CD?)

The more detail, the better.

It won't get to the start-up screen. It gets to the (Splash?) screen that
says the name of the operating system, and it hangs there. (this is the
screen right after the Sony screen...it is the ME screen, then *normally*
the screen would go black while the booting process is doing its thing
before you starting seeing the icons and all that stuff on the desktop) But,
it never gets to that point. The startup disk is a floppy, and I can do the
system restore, scandisk, all those tests, but when all is said and done,
and I attempt to start the computer, it gets hung up at that same screen. I
can't boot in safe mode or any other mode. It's almost like some little
glitch is holding the hard drive from proceeding past a certain point in the
boot process.

I answered someone in THIS newsgroup. It would have been *rude* not to have
answered. I have manners.
