Until recently I was using Win98 with FAT32 on a computer with a
master and a slave drive. Then problems developed, which I have
reason to suspect involved the motherboard– not the hard drives. That
was the proverbial last straw, so I started fresh with a new computer
running WinXP. I was delighted to discover my old word processing
program reinstalled without a hitch using XP's Compatibility Wizard.
So far, so good.
The slave drive to my old PC was devoted to a backup of the master
drive using the utility that came with WinME and its contents were
compressed to save space, plus a separate uncompressed folder with
copies of my word processing files.
So here are my questions:
(1) If I install the old slave drive in my new PC, will XP be able to
retrieve its word processing files even though its format is FAT32?
(2) If the previous answer is "yes," if I then make the old master
drive a slave drive and install it in my new PC, will I be able to
retrieve at least some files from it too? There were bitmap images
that would be difficult to replace, plus some images which were
original art (and hence unique). There were also a couple of old
programs (for example, a chess program) for which downloaded upgrades
are no longer offered. My plan as to those would be to copy their
files in Win98's Program Files folder only to WinXP's counterpart,
then run XP's Wizard again before using them. I did this once before
after a motherboard croaked and I had to completely reinstall Win98–
since I didn't mess with any of the OS files it worked. But then, I
wasn't trying to move the files to WinXP as I'd like to now.
Any knowledgeable input would be appreciated. Please post to the
group.
I have a read/write CD drive on my new PC, so hopefully I won't have
to wrestle with these particular problems again.
