I need to document the use for windows services, explaining
what services there are, how they are used and what they
can do/be used for. I am unclear what is meant by the term
'windows services'. These services needn't be specific to
2000. Any help greatly appreciated.

If you want to see some examples of Windows 2000 services (programs usually
installed by the operating system which work in the background and are often
used to assist stuff like making your PC run properly, controlling a network
of computers, communicating with your PC from another PC using a modem), go
to Programs, Administrative Tools.

If it isn't there, go to Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu, Advanced
and tick Display Administrative tools.

Click on it and click on Services. You will see a window full of icons. If
you double click on each of these icons you will see a Descriptions which
tells you what that particular Service does. Sweep your mouse over the
description if it is longer than the box.

Look up any of the words which you don't understand in Windows Help.
